What are repeating instruments?
Repeating instruments (or repeating forms) allow the same instrument to be reused multiple times.
Some examples may include but are not limited to the following: data from multiple visits or observations, concomitant medications, adverse events, or repetitive surveys (daily, weekly, etc.).
Enabling repeating instruments
Enabling the repeating instruments requires the Project Design and Setup user privilege.
Project Setup > Enable optional modules and customizations > Repeating instruments*
*A longitudinal project will have this option labelled as ‘Repeating instruments and events’ instead.

What are repeating events?
Repeating events requires longitudinal data collection to be enabled. REDCap will allow you to 'Repeat Entire Event' meaning that all the event's instruments will repeat together and stay connected or 'Repeat Instruments' meaning that the instruments will repeat separately and independently from each other on that event.
The first step is to build the instrument that you will make repeating in the online designer. In this case we've made the instrument, "Medications". Note: The instrument can be either a regular data entry form or a survey.
Build out the instrument as you wish.
You may or may not need to designate the new instrument to the correct events
Go to Project Setup and review the Enable optional modules and customizations menu. Click 'Enable/Modify' next to 'Repeatable instruments and events'
We can then define how we would like our repeating instruments to act
For this example, I am asking the Repeating Instrument Tool to repeat only the medication instrument and I would like it to repeat independantly of the other instruments. Here are the settings.
Click save at the end of the screen.
These settings will make the medication instrument repeating. You'll see a few changes. In the record status dashboard a plus sign will appear to allow REDCap Users to add additional forms
For surveys, REDCap Users can additionally manage how a repeating survey will look for survey participants. They can do this by going to Project Set-Up → Online Designer → Survey Settings of the Instrument in question.
Under Survey Termination Options, users can create custom text for the button and decide when the option to repeat the survey should be displayed.
The veiw for Survey Participants will look like this.

In the above example, the ‘Monthly Data’ event repeats, which means that the ‘Check-in’ and ‘Quality of Life Survey’ will always repeat together.
Custom labels can only be used with repeating instruments, not events.

Instruments enabled as surveys can also be repeatable. This can be controlled by the study team, or the survey can enable the participant to repeat the form.
Allow survey respondents to repeat the survey
In the Survey Settings page for the instrument, under Survey Termination Options, respondents can be allowed to repeat the survey.

With the option to ‘Take this survey again’ enabled, the survey will include an extra button before or after they submit. The text of the button can be customized.
