How do I create a page break between questions in REDCap?

Research projects may want data to appear in a particular way.  Sometimes we would like to create page breaks within instruments.

Sometimes, researchers intend to collect data with a mobile device, and do not want participants to see the previous question when answering the next question.

Start in the Project Set-Up Tab, Select Online Designer.

Then select the instrument in which you would like to set page breaks.  In this case we will select "Demographics"

Review your instrument and add a field where the page break is desired.

Add the Begin new Section Field Type.  Include additional text if you need it in the section.

This will create a section break in your instrument.  However, you will need to change the settings in your REDCap instrument

if you would like the section to create a "one question at a time" view.  To do this, go back to the Online Designer and select Survey Settings.

Scroll down to 'Survey Customizations'.  Under Question Display Format, change the setting from the default, which is to display 'all on one page'

to 'one section per page (multiple pages)'  You can also choose to display page numbers and/or hide the ability for users to return to the previous page.

These settings, combined with using section breaks in your survey, can make your survey display as you require.
